Jakarta International Stadium

Windtech worked with the Jakarta government to deliver a brand-new, multi-function stadium named Jakarta International Stadium. On completion, the stadium will host an estimated 82,000 spectators.

Windtech undertook a combination of wind tunnel testing and computational fluid dynamics on this project, providing a showcase of the hybrid approach which is now becoming a pre-requisite for projects looking to make the most of the latest technology available.

Windtech first undertook a full pedestrian wind comfort study in the wind tunnel, assessing the microclimate for the important outdoor areas such as the playing field and the seating bowl. In this study, hot wire anemometry was used, which is proven to be the most accurate method for data collection. Wind speeds were then compared against Lawson’s comfort criteria to provide information on the suitability of each area for its chosen use or activity.

Subsequently, the wind speed data from the wind tunnel testing was used to calibrate a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation, which was combined with a seasonal analysis of the local climate including temperature. The results from this detailed analysis provided the project team with a more complete understanding of the spectators’ overall comfort. One particularly useful metric is the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI), which provides graphical and useful information on how comfortable occupants will find a space.

This hybrid approach of combining CFD with results from wind tunnel testing not only offers a robust analysis of thermal comfort, wind comfort and natural ventilation performance, but also helped to assess the suitability of wind conditions for the hybrid turf proposed for the arena, the first of its kind in Indonesia.
