Wind Study for International Slavery Museum & Maritime Museum Redevelopment
Windtech Consultants were appointed to conduct a detailed wind study to support the development’s planning submission and public realm design. Unlike new builds on cleared sites, this project presented the unique challenge of integrating wind mitigation strategies within the constraints of existing historic architecture.
As part of a transformative £58 million redevelopment, the International Slavery Museum and the Maritime Museum in Liverpool are set to undergo a major refurbishment between 2025 and 2028. These culturally significant institutions are housed within heritage-listed buildings along the iconic Albert Dock, requiring highly considered environmental and design interventions.
Complex Wind Study for a Heritage Retrofit
Working within a tightly controlled heritage environment, our experienced wind engineers undertook a comprehensive wind study to assess how existing wind conditions interact with the site layout, entrances, and surrounding pedestrian areas. Due to the limitations on altering building massing or form, the study focused on subtle yet effective solutions aligned with conservation guidelines.
Our assessments identified potential wind acceleration zones near public entrances, circulation areas, and the surrounding waterfront. These insights informed strategies that maintain comfort and safety without impacting the site’s heritage fabric.
Integrated Wind Mitigation Solutions
In collaboration with the broader design team, Windtech recommended tailored wind mitigation strategies that respected the architectural character of the museums. These included:
-
-
- Use of architecturally sympathetic canopies to reduce downwash at entrances
- Discreet screening and landscaping elements that blend with existing public realm treatments
- Positioning of street furniture to subtly redirect pedestrian-level wind flows
-
The result is a planning-approved scheme that balances technical performance with cultural sensitivity.
