The iconic and popular Grade 2* EMD Cinema into a multi-purpose entertainment venue for Waltham Forest. This art deco building in Walthamstow was originally opened as the Granada cinema in 1930, famous for having been frequented by Alfred Hitchcock; and in its heyday saw performances from many renowned musicians, such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.
Windtech Consultants were appointed to carry out Computational Fluid Dynamics and Dynamic Thermal Modelling to assess the detailed indoor HVAC design efficiency and occupant thermal comfort, under different seasonal and internal load conditions – an innovative multi-software coupled modelling method, using Hevacomp and Engys Helyx CFD. This study demonstrated an analytical model for the HVAC system, which is applied to assess the peak and part load thermal performance of a case study building. This led to an optimised design for both the mechanical system and an improved space for the occupants. Constraints in the retrofitted building and its historical significance led to innovative solutions being formed to optimise the system.
