Pedestrian Wind Environment Study Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Crosstree Peninsular Square, London, UK
Located adjacent to the Millennium Dome (O2 Arena), this iconic area of London has recently undergone one of the largest rejuvenation schemes. The rapid urban growth and ambitious large-scale masterplan developments in the region have created the potential for substantial changes to local wind conditions, which are critical to ensuring pedestrian comfort and safety.
Windtech addressed these challenges and conducted a thorough Pedestrian Wind Environment Study, analysing the impact of the proposed development and the cumulative effects of neighbouring projects on the local wind conditions. Using a combination of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations and Pedestrian Microclimate Wind Tunnel testing, Windtech was able to assess the wind environment across Crosstree Peninsula Square with precision and clarity.
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) allowed Windtech to create detailed visualisations of the wind patterns, highlighting areas that might be at risk for adverse wind effects. This data-driven approach enabled the team to identify potential problem areas and design an effective mitigation strategy to improve wind safety and comfort throughout the site. The wind study evaluated ground-level pedestrian zones and elevated regions, ensuring that every development aspect adhered to stringent wind comfort and safety standards.
This project is a prime example of how a comprehensive Pedestrian Wind Environment Study combined with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) can optimise urban design. By addressing wind-related challenges early in the planning process, Windtech ensured Crosstree Peninsula Square was a safe, functional, and inviting space for pedestrians, contributing to the area’s success as a modern and sustainable urban environment.
